KANGYATSE 2 SUMMIT + MARKHA VALLEY
KANGYATSE 2 SUMMIT + MARKHA VALLEY
WHY CHOOSE KANGYATSE II ?
Kang Yatse is a towering, throne shaped peak which dominates the views on the Markha Valley in Ladakh. The mountain has two summits. The true eastern summit is higher at 6,400 m but requires an extremely technical traverse across a knife-edge ridge. We will climb the lower western summit at 6,250 m. The Western summit, Kangyatse II is lower at 6250m and is quite often climbed. It is perfect for people who would like to climb their first 6000-er and would like to stay away from the crowds. The Markha valley offers the perfect acclimatization trek needed for climbing a 6000m mountain. On a clear day you see views as far Nun Kun & Zanskar ranges in the West & the K2, Broad Peak & Gasherbrum Massif in the far North. Peaking Kang Yatse II itself is a milestone for serious trekkers/aspiring mountaineers, testing your limits, with an indescribable view as your reward. After summiting the peak, you will climb over the 5280 m Kongmaru La pass, and descend down the narrow Shang Gorge to finish your expedition at Chokdo.
Here are a few highlights:
- To access Kangyatse II , we need to trek through the Markha valley, which is a beautiful trek on its own. We get this as an added bonus apart from the summit of Kangyatse II
- We will be trekking through the Hemis National Park, famous for its snow leopard and blue sheep habitats
- We will experience the thrill of two exciting river crossings on the trail.
- Since Kangyatse II is a relatively more isolated than its more commercial cousin Stok kangri, we will surely see lesser number of people on the route.
- This is a great way to hit the 20,000 feet mark, and can be an introduction to mountaineering.
- The view from the summit of Kangyatse II is absolutely breathtaking. We get to witness the beauty of the Karakoram peaks including Broad peak, the Gasherbrum massif’s and the infamous K2!
- This is one of the few treks where the chances of spotting wildlife are high. This includes Blue sheep, Marmots, Pika’s and the HImalayan weasel. If we are incredibly lucky, we might get to spot the elusive snow leopard as well!
- We will experience Ladakhi culture at its best as we will be trekking on the Markha valley trail. When possible, we will stay at homestay’s instead of camping, to get the experience of both local food and culture, as well as camping.
