GOECHA LA

GOECHA LA

WHY CHOOSE GOECHA LA ?

Goecha la has become a very popular trek amongst adventure enthusiasts. It comprises a unique diversity of lowlands, steep-sided valleys and spectacular snow-clad mountains including the world’s third highest peak, Mt. Khangchendzonga. Numerous lakes and glaciers, including the 26 km long Zemu Glacier, dot the barren high altitudes. “La” is a tibetan word for “mountain pass”, Goecha la is therefore a pass between Guicha peak and Mount Kanchenjunga, the third highest peak on the Earth, and India’s highest undisputed peak.

Here are a few highlights:

You will be trekking through Kanchenjunga National Park (KNP), Home to half of the nation’s, bird diversity, wild trees, orchids and rhododendrons and one third of the country’s flowering plants..

  • KNP is a UNESCO “mixed World heritage site”, the only one of its kind in India.
  • Geologists believe that it is this range that gives Sikkim a weather system of its own and is the reason why it is a biodiversity hotspot.
  • You will be trekking through dense forests on the first day, these forests are ancient, the trees from around here are more than a few centuries old.
  • On the third day you trek through high altitude alpine meadows, and later through glacial Moraines steeped with boulders that tower above you.
  •  The trek path comprises a unique diversity of lowlands, steep-sided valleys and spectacular snow-clad mountains.
  • Trekking through the widest and most extensive zone of Stunted forests in the Himalayan area would be a pleasure.
  • Samiti Lake- A placid high altitude lake is a treat to one’s senses, the colours pronounced by various algae in the Lake cause it to be seen in different colours from different view points.
  • The trek has several open campsites, which means that a view of the night sky is unobstructed. On a clear, no Moon day one can spot, the Andromeda Galaxy and several other stars and planets with the naked eye.
  • This trail is a bird watchers paradise (when there aren’t too many trekkers on the route).
  • The high snow clad mountains seem to walk with you till you reach the very end of the trek.
  • The view from the approach to the pass is unparalleled. You wouldn’nt get closer to the Kanchenjunga massif than this.
  • One should also remember that this trail is as ancient as the trees that inhabit the forests of the National Park. This has been a route for many a thrill seekers, Adventurers who had then calculated the height of the mountain from here and declared it the highest in the World, which it remained for a decade before Sagarmatha took over that crown. The trail is also a reminder of the footsteps of the determined Monks who have wanted to find the 5 treasures of the high snows on the slopes of Kanchenjunga since the time of the discovery of the “hidden land” which is called “Beyul Demajong” or Sikkim as we know it,
